Coccomyces strobi on Pinus strobus
Ethan Crenson, 16-04-2019 02:06
Hello,

Yesterday in New York City on Pinus strobus I saw what I assumed was a pyrenomycete.  Tiny erumpent pustule-like fruiting bodies on a fallen branch.  However, when I sectioned one of them I found that the interior is a solid yellow.  Asci are 92.5-107.5 x 7.5-10µm.  Paraphyses are filiform and curled at the ends.  Ascospores are 30-36 x 1.5-2µm.  I am assuming that this is Coccomyces strobi because of the substrate and the spore shape and dimensions, even though in this state it is probably immature (?).  Any input would be very welcome.

Ethan

Hi Ethan, that definitely looks rhytismatalean from the microphotographs. Perhaps C. strobi as you say its immature. We found these mature and sporulating in mid May last year up here in Concord, MA. Best wishes - J

Hello Jason!  Very good to hear from you.  Thanks for your help.  Perhaps I'll leave these in a suitable place and see if they mature.

Hi Ethan, my pleasure. You can also go back and find more in a month. They're pretty common - at least we found many injured or dead saplings with these fungi fruiting on them last year. Kind regards - J
