Peziza muscicola or berthetiana?
Carmel Sammut, 04-02-2015 22:01
Hi,
I have a few collections of a black Peziza from the same area collected over the last 2 years. For now I am presenting this specimen which has some characteristic of P. muscicola. The specimens were collected (10/1/15) amongst mosses in an area with Pinus halapensis, at Verdala Buskett, Malta.
The collected material was 15-30 x 14-23mm, hymenium dark black, inner surface smooth sometimes pitted. No latex was observed on cutting or breaking. Asci J+ve, biseptate. Paraphyses slightly inflated, septate. Spore are biguttulate at the polar ends, very rough with ?ridges, reticulum, warts - after staining with lactophenol CB. Size (11.5) 12.8 - 16.8 (17.3) x (7.4) 8.1 - 9 (9.2)µm Q = (1.3) 1.4 - 1.9 (2); Me = 14.6 x 8.7 µm ; Qe = 1.7. Other collections show slightly larger spores up to 18µm in lenght.
What is your opinion?

Re : Peziza muscicola or berthetiana?

Myc. 56 : 39-47)

Cordialement

René

Re : Peziza muscicola or berthetiana?
Thank you René for your detailed explanation. The medullary excipulum appears globular, but I did not examine the intermediate layers. I will take a look when I find some time. The asci are of the pleurorhyncus type, at least that is easier to find.
