Synaptospora setosa?
Eduard Osieck, 06-11-2019 12:19
Could this setose pyrenomycete (scattered on Ulmus bark, no corticioid fungus present) be Synaptospora setosa? Spore size is 8.5-9.5 x 5.5-6 um. I'm in doubt because the spores are much less fused as shown in pictures in Huhndorf (1999) and in Declerq's picture in Ascomycete.org 3: 40-42 (2011). Furthermore the setae are much longer than indicated by Huhndorf (1999). However the more roundish and variable shaped spores are rather different from the even ellipsoid spores of e.g. Helminthosphaeria hyphodermiae (the best alternative but with narrower spores).

Thanks for help in advance, Eduard

Re : Synaptospora setosa?
Maybe.  If you have ample material and want to send it to me for DNA sequencing, I would be happy to investigate this specimen further.

Best,
Andy

Re : Synaptospora setosa?
OK, thanks, if sufficient ascocarps are present, I will include it in the next batch. Eduard
