Tiny disc on Acer
Margot en Geert Vullings, 13-02-2026 18:05
On February 9, 2026, we found these small hairy discs on a dead branch of Acer.

Disc:
0.2-0.4 mm in size, sessile, underside dark, hairs lighter to the top, hymenium dark.

Structure:
Textura globosa angularis - > prismatica.

Hairs:
Hairs completely encrusted.
Encrustation loosens in KOH, no change in KOH + Melzers.

Asci:
Difficult to find due to the many hairs and paraphyses.
Measured in water: (43.2) 43.21 - 43.2 × 6.5 - 6.76 (6.8) µm, Q = 6.4 - 6.68 (6.7)
Croziers + we think.
IKI neg, also after KOH + Melzers J neg.

Paraphyses:
Cylindrical with sept.

Spores:
Hyaline with 2 guttules mostly at the poles, sometimes a few smaller guttules.
Measured in water: (6.8) 7.1 - 7.8 (8.2) × (2.2) 2.3 - 2.67 (2.7) µm, Q = (2.6) 2.8 - 3.2 (3.4)

Is it possible to say what genus and perhaps what species this could be?
Many thanks in advance, Geert&Margot

Re : Tiny disc on Acer
One more collection of a complex of species related to "Hyphodiscus" stereicola. It is my folder "Parahyphodiscus" in Cordieritidaceae. Species delimitation is highly difficult and it is not clear if the names Trichopeziza viridula or Chlorosplenium viridulum are applicable for one of them.

Re : Tiny disc on Acer
Thanks Hans-Otto, it does indeed look very similar to the photos in your folder.

It's nice to have some idea of what it is.

We assume you are referring to our previous topic, dark disc on Populus 2-2-2026?

Quite a coincidence to find these discs twice in such a short time in different locations.
Kind regards, Geert&Margot

I am not aware, on ascofrance?

Re : Tiny disc on Acer

We thought this because your answer starts with "Another collection."

Kind regards, Geert&Margot

Re : Tiny disc on Acer
Not sure. But if the asci are J+ then it is something else.

Sorry, we overlooked that.

Re : Tiny disc on Acer
You have no photo of the ascus in IKI and of the spores?
Margot en Geert Vullings, 14-02-2026 14:52
Re : Tiny disc on Acer
Photographs of asci and spores in IKI from both collections.

First two photo's collection 24-1-2026

Last two photo's collection 9-2-2026

Good and sorry, I overlooked the hidden photos in your first collection. Must first make up my mind.

Re : Tiny disc on Acer
I confirm this is a member of "Parahyphodiscus" (Cordieritidaceae). Maybe Adam wants to take a sequence if the material is in good shape.

Re : Tiny disc on Acer
Thank you Hans-Otto, the material will be too little for sequencing, there were barely 10 tiny discs.

Kind regards, Geert&Margot
