On Sorbaria
Marja Pennanen, 09-11-2020 13:10
Hello forum,

once again I'm in serious trouble trying to find even the genus for my collection.

These odd ones are about 0,2-0,5 mm wide.

The spores are polar guttulate, about 4-6x2-3.

The asci are 25-40x6-8 and seems to be IKI-.

The hairs are strange for me, hooked and covered with resins or something, about 15-30x2-4.

Help is certainly appreciated: Marja

Hi,

How about "Unguiculella"? Not sure how the genus should be defined exactly, nor roughly, but still. Lot's of resin/pigment definately and relatively small spores. Hyaloscyphaceae s str excluded I think.

Dear Marja

Sorbaria is something like Spiraea?

reminds me of Unguiculella eurotioides, although the resin sounds strange.

yeah, that pinkish coloured hymenium fits well with eurotioides. I am also unsure how well the hairs in the photo fit. Can't really make it.

Re : On Sorbaria
Thank you for fast answers.!

I've never found an Unguiculella and am not sure, if even now.

The hairs did not seem glassy and the cells are coloured. I will make another preparate and study with oil immersion.

Be back later: Marja

PS: Sorbaria is a bush, but I only suppose this was on it.  I collected on other bushes, too  some days ago, so I can't be 100% sure.

Re : On Sorbaria
Hello again,

now I saw the hairs better and yes they may be glassy with a lumen at the base. There has been frosty nights here, so the condition of fruitbodies may not be the best.

I have to admire your capability to end with a definition on very insufficient photos and descriptions!

So, I suppose having found a species of an ealier unfamiliar genus for me and propably 7. collection of the genus in Finland.

Thanfully: Marja

Re : On Sorbaria
I still would check the ectal excipulum which muast be hyaline in contrast to Unguiculariopsis. But: U. eurotioides has also hooked paraphyses. This should be checked too.

Hello Marja

Attached a documented find of U. eurotoides I\in the Netherlands on stalks of Eupatorium cannabinum (koninginnekriid in Dutch).

Friendly greetings

Re : On Sorbaria
Hi.

I found some not so colourful cell areas, but can not say anything sure of paraphyses. It has been moist here and then there is not so much need for paraphyses to protect asci.

Jac, thak you for your document. The colouring of some cells is visible there, too.

I'll  put some insecurity to the definition: Marja

Re : On Sorbaria
Marja, we do not know what function the paraphyses have, particularly those projecting ones and even those rare ones with a hook. Protection I do not think, rather condensation of dew - perhaps. The paraphyses should be studied here, can be done in KOH+Congo Red, even in a squash mount.
