Xylaria oxyacanthae on Juglans regia?
Gernot Friebes, 03-09-2020 18:26
Hi,

in the monograph on European species of Xylaria by Jacques (http://www.ascofrance.com/uploads/xylaria/201406.pdf) it is mentioned under X. oxyacanthae that anamorphic stromata of Xylaria are known from nuts of J. regia but they have not been identified to species yet. Here we have a collection made by a friend with stromata on old nutshells of J. regia and we are wondering if this could in fact be X. oxyacanthae.
The ascospores measure about 8.5–11.5 x 4.7–5.4 µm. They have a germ slit that is often clearly shorter than spore length.
Thanks for your input!

Best wishes,
Gernot

Re : Xylaria oxyacanthae on Juglans regia?
Hi Gernot,

nice find, much like X. oxyacanthae but acospore morphology is indeed a bit deviating.

My comments on this species have been outdated by JU et al. (2018) Mycologia 110(4): 726-749 who provisionally recognize X. oxyacanthae as able to colonize woody fruits and seeds of various unrelated plants but do not rule out the possibility of intraspecific variations related to the host-specificity.

You should ask Yu-Ming Ju if he is interested in sequencing your material which seems in good condition. I guess he will.

Cheers,

Jacques

Re : Xylaria oxyacanthae on Juglans regia?
Thank you very much, Jacques.

In the meantime my friend collected presumably the same Xylaria on a peach stone at ± the exact same location, so it would support the hypothesis that this species is not particularly host specific.

It seems to me that the germ slit is a little bit short for X. oxyacanthae but I have little experience with that species...

I will contact Yu-Ming Ju and keep you informed in case we make any progress.

Best wishes,
Gernot
