quite surely a Hymenoscyphus. You did not see any free spores? SAre they somewhat pointed at the base or is it impossible to say which is the upper end?
Photos of them at oil immersion would be helpful. Also you need to study the ascus base for croziers and the iodine reaction.
The contents of the living paraphyses are also helpful.
Are you sure it is a twig or perhaps a leaf petiole?
