Anthracobia but which one?
Maria Plekkenpol, 09-08-2025 13:13
Maria PlekkenpolHello,
Yesterday I found these on burnt soil. Apothecia orange, largest 3 mm. Cupshaped at first, then flattening. Very vaguely hairs to be seen, but under the microscope I really had to search and make several preparations before I found them. Asci 8 spored, spores biguttulate, 17,4 - 20,2 x 9,5 - 10,8. Parafyses not uncinate, filled with darker orange and apices up to 9,4 µ.
Because of the fact that finding the hairs was difficult I hope I measured them correctly. Size hairs margin 58 - 80 x 5 - 10.
Following the key I arrive at A. nitida, but of course I am not sure :).
What would be your opinion? Thank you already for your help!
Greetings, Maria

Re : Anthracobia but which one?
Are you sure about the spore width?
It seems too wide based on your picture.

Re : Anthracobia but which one?
Hi Nicolas,

I did measure from the outer walls ... if that should be the inner walls than I have to measure again. If that is how it should be done, the sizes are correct.

Re : Anthracobia but which one?
Well, if the dimensions of ascospores are correct, as well as "hairs" size, this points to A. melaloma, but the latter has conspicuous "hairs". That doesn't seem the case for this collection.
The other option is A. macrocystis, but your collection has too wide ascospores...

Re : Anthracobia but which one?
Hi Nicolas,
First: thanks for your help and responses!
There are/were indeed no conspicuous hairs, in quite a few preparations (I didn't give up soon :)).
If I understand you correctly the spores do have to be measured from outerwall to outerwall?Because if that is not the case, I have been measuring my spores wrongly for years...
Looking at a determination of A. macrocystis from Enrique Rubio (2018) I see spore measures 16,5 - 19,2 x 10 - 12?
I also read your comment on a recent post saying that you are currently diving into Anthracobia? If you want me to sent you the material, it is still fresh.

Greetings, Maria

Re : Anthracobia but which one?
Your way to measure the ascospores is correct.
So you can send your collection to me, I'll try to get a correct name.

Hi Nicolas,
I will dry the material and then I will send it, thank you already for taking a look at it!
