Mollisoid fungus on Eriophorum angustifolium stems
Enrique Rubio, 01-06-2009 21:12
Enrique RubioHi t all.
I's like to know your opinion about this asco patellarioid, up to 0.6 m, on submerged Eriophorum angustifolium old stems.
The hymenium (perhaps too very mature) has ochraceus hues.

Asci IKI bb, with clearly croziers. Spores septate inside the asci. Paraphyses hyaline, without Vb's (they are too old?)

Apothecia firmly attached by brownish anchoring hyphae.
I arrived to a close related species with Belonopsis mediella, but I'm not sure...
Many thanks again

Dear Enrique

I think your fungus is "Belonopsis" iridis. Your specimen ERD-4503 (on Typha) is very similar. Spore length varies somewhat variable in this species. Again you can look for the amyloidity of the excipular margin here.

I could not enlarge the images this time, therefore I could just read the spore size. Also I could not look at the database when searching for iridis (sometimes Ascofrance does not work properly here.

I look for the amyloidity of the excipular margin, but I have not seen her. I think could be a variable property.
May thanks

There is also a characteristic Phialocephala anamorph you could search for on the subiculum. It was so far only once seen in B. iridis, by Guy Garcia:

Hi Zotto,
I see you have renamed my collection labelled Belonopsis guestphalicum with the name Mollisia iridis (P. Crouan & H. Crouan) Le Gal 1953 Revue Mycol., Paris 18 : 122. But i think this name is preocuped by Mollisia iridis (Rehm) Sacc. 1889 Syll. Fung. 8 : 331. Can you give me precise details about your choice ?
Best, Guy

Re:Mollisoid fungus on Eriophorum angustifolium stems
Hi Guy

yes, I think guestphalicum is the same species as iridis Crouan, and I am quite sure it does not belong in Mollisia because of the absence of VBs and also because of the anamorph. That there is another combination in Mollisia is of subordinate interest, as long as we do not consider the present species to be a Mollisia.
