Peziza disc
Malcolm Greaves, 03-09-2016 00:46
Malcolm GreavesCan someone help me with this find from Spahgnum covered marsh on the banks of an overgrown pond.
An almost flat disc 30mm across with a dark surface and a pale stalk of over 15mm.
I am not sure if there was any reaction to Meltzers but it is possible that the asci were very slightly blued towards the tip. The slightly verrucose spores were 14.5-15.5 x 6.5-7.5.
Paraphyses were hooked and swollen at the tips.
The outer surface was covered in what look to be short twisted hairs.
Thanks for any guidance.

Re : Peziza disc
Very interesting collection! I'm quite sure this is Lepidotia hispida (Quél.) Boudier (syn. Peziza quelepidotia).
We discuss recently in this forum about a similar fungus: http://ascofrance.fr/search_forum/44521

Thanks Nicolas
Mine certainly looks very similar to the specimen found by Rubén, even down to the small white imature specimen alongside.
I have joined Ascomycete so will check out the article as soon as my membership comes through.

Re : Peziza disc

Hola Mal, hola Nicolas.

Sí, yo creo que la especie que acaba de poner Malcolm es igual a la que yo encontré hace unas semanas.

También se observa en tus fotos el pigmento rojizo oscuro del interior de las paráfisis y buena foto de los pelos del exterior.

Saludos

Rubén

Hi Rubén
The features of my find compare well with yours. Looking at the article in the Ascomycete journal it is also a good fit and looks identical to the "mature ascomata" photo. The only slight concern is that both our finds have swollen ends to the asci and the sketch by Nicolas shows no such swelling. Would this be a problem?

Re : Peziza disc
I don't think so. When I studied the collection presented in this article, I did it with rehydrated material, so such differences might be "normal". I also missed what you called "twisted hairs" on the outer surface.

You should write an article with Ruben to present your collections and these "new" characters. It's always interesting to describe some rare and ancient species on the base of living characters!
