Saccobolus verrucisporus? eleutherosporus?
Björn Wergen, 29-01-2012 01:24
Björn WergenHello,

I think this is not the first time asking about the differences between S. eleutherosporus, S. verrucisporus and S. beckii and others.

I have tried different keys to determine my finding, but it didn't work well, so I want to ask you if you have any ideas.

The substrate is rabbit dung. It grows together with Lasiobolus cf ciliatus, Thelebolus microsporus and Sporormiella sp. (not determined yet).

My problems with this finding are the spore ornamentation, which is obviously warty in some cases, in other nearly smooth and spore size around 12-14x5-7µm, so I think it is NOT S. beckii and NOT S. depauperatus (which I have found some times, this species has other fb shape, fb size and spore ornamentation).

Thanks for help
björn

------------
edit: the spore cluster measure 30-36x15-17µm and have a distinct unilateral gel sheath.

Hello Björn.

Always difficult to separate these species. I already found this problem before. Your case is similar to Saccobolus aff.verrucisporus described by Dover. I collected several times on different substrates. It is left to age are interested in these fungi, and to observe different stages of maturity, because sometimes I think it does, the size and shape of ornaments are changing. Good observations.?

Re : Saccobolus verrucisporus? eleutherosporus?
Hi Michel,

yes, the drawing in DOVERI is very similar to my finding, especially in spore size and ornamentation. I think I will call this finding S. aff verrucisporus, until new material has been found to compare with.

It is my first Saccobolus finding which is not S. depauperatus or S. glaber (which are common species).

björn
