Reddening asco
Bregtje Miedema, 05-02-2020 11:19
Goodmorning,

From the Leeuwarder bos (Leeuwarden, Netherlands) a small asco, very reddening, no stipe. Asci IKI+, Croziers+, biserate, 70-95 x 6-7 µm. Parafyses septate. Spores with at least two drops and mostly 1 sept. 11-13 x 2-3 µm.

Can someone tell me what species this is (maybe Calycina?) ?

Thank you and kind regards,

Bregtje Miedema

Re : Reddening asco

Bonjour Bregtje,

These reddening apos remind me of Calycina heterospora but Congo red is not the best to observe cells contents (in spores and paraphyses) .

Indeed the spores would be septate and with oil drops in C. heterospora.

Re : Reddening asco
Goodafternoon Michel,

Here are some pictures made in water.

Maybe that helps.

Thank you,

Re : Reddening asco

I am not sure from image 10 but spores in image 11 could fit .

I join pictures showing paraphyses and ejected spores in water and paraphyses content un Cresyl blue.

Hello Michel,

Here some pictures made in Cottonblue and KOH 5%.

I do not have Cresylblue.

Re : Reddening asco

Cotton blue and KOH kill cells and do not bring valuable information in that case.

From image 15 , though, one can see that excipulum cells would match Calycina's , as on this picture in water.

Re : Reddening asco
Hello Michel,

These two pictures are from the least red asco left, in water.  The asco's are getting in a rather bad shape now, if they weren't already.

Re : Reddening asco

You are right, Bregtje, the apos were already in a rather bad shape and cells appear dead now . I'm afraid these last pictures will not allow more to say.

Thank you for your help, Michel.

It was a very interesting puzzle.
