Small disco on leaf of Camellia japonica
Masanori Kutsuna, 14-07-2014 04:21
Hello everyone,

I found small disco on fallen leaves of Camellia japonica in Japan.

Up to 1 mm., short stalk, disc whitish (almost black when dry), outer surface brown to blackish towards the base, with sparse marginal hairs.
Asci 8 spored, I-, 105-140 x 5-6.
Paraphyses filiform, 1-1.5 in diam., sometimes branched at the tips.
Ascospore hyaline, with 2 (or -4) drops at ends, 11.4-14.2 x 2.6-3.2.
Excipulum of t. angularis, brownish cell walls, 3-8 microm. in diameter.
Marginal hairs arising from surface, almost hyaline, septate at base, 40-100 microm. long.

Any suggestion?

Re : Small disco on leaf of Camellia japonica
I think this is a Zoellneria (now Chaetomella will have priority according to the new rules).

There is only one anamorph species known according to my knowledge, but about 40 of the anamorph. I have no idea whether there is one described on Camellia. Th species are possibly host-specific. If you see blackish pyncidia with the same hairs nearby, then this should be the anamorph.

The hairs in Z. rosarum are intensely brown below and rather wide (about9-12 µm). How wide are your hairs?

Re : Small disco on leaf of Camellia japonica
Thank you, Zotto.

Hairs are less than 5 µm. I will look for pycnidia.

Regards.
