Hymenoscyphus albidus?
William Slosse, 07-06-2026 15:10
William SlosseHello everyone,

On 05-06-26, I found following asco in Kraaiveldbos in Wingene (Belgium).
The habitat is a damp deciduous forest on clayey-loamy soil.
The fungus grew abundantly on leaf stalks of Fraxinus excelsior.
Given that, in my opinion, croziers are absent, I believe I am dealing with Hymenoscyphus albidus.
Can this be confirmed?

Macroscopic:

° Apothecia: max up to 5.5 mm diam; white to pale cream-colored; slightly concave to flat
° Stipe: up to max 2.2 mm long; apical white to pale cream-colored, basal reddish-brown, base black

Microscopic:

° Asci: 8-spored; spores biseriate; apical ring blue in Melzer (Hymenoscyphus-type); growing from simple septa, no croziers
° Spores (measurement in water with free, living spores): (17.2) 18 - 19.7 (20.5) × (4.3) 4.4 - 5.1 (5.4) µm
Q = (3.4) 3.6 - 4.1 (4.5) ; N = 20
Me = 18.9 × 4.8 µm ; Qe = 3.9; with 3-4 large LBs accompanied by several smaller ones
° Paraphyses: cylindrical without inflated apex; with refractive VBs
° Ectal excipulum: textura prismatica
° Medullar excipulum: texctura intricata

Many thx in advance,
William
