Black Spheres on Carex acutiformis
Peter Thompson, 05-06-2015 20:49
Hello Everyone,

I am puzzled by black ascomycetes with central ostioles which are immersed individually beneath the epidermis of a dead flower stalk of Carex acutiformis.

It seems that the shape of the spores does not readily suggest a suitable genus. All are slightly curved, presumably in various stages from fresh, living spores to dead ones, judging by the variation in the guttulation.

I have attached a photo of the fruit bodies and a sketch of the microscopy and wonder if anyone can shed any light on this for me.

Thank you,
With Best Wishes,
Peter.

Re : Black Spheres on Carex acutiformis
Hello Peter,
I seem to be recovering from the lurghi so am taking an interest in ascos again!
A possible genus for your material on Carex is Plagiosphaera, but I cannot suggest a species to match your collection.
Just hope someone comes up with more information,
Regards,
Peter W
