Tiny white apothecia on cone
Chris Johnson,
30-09-2014 13:05
These apothecia were found on the scale of an old Picea abies cone. The largest is just 150 µm across.
Just 3 spores were available for measurement: 6.9-8.2 x 2.2-2.6 µm (a guide but probably unreliable).
Asci: 39-51 x 6.4-9.6 µm. The tips turned blue in Lugol's.
The first micro image is in water, the second in Lugol's.
Any guidance as to where I should be looking, welcome.
Amitiés, Chris

Are there no hairs? It looks a bit like a Hyaloscypha.

Re : Tiny white apothecia on cone
Definitely no hairs found and I did look carefully.

Re : Tiny white apothecia on cone
On the upper right it looks like a curved thin structure, reminiscent of Hamatocanthoscypha hairs. No idea if I am wrong.

Re : Tiny white apothecia on cone
Many thanks for your thoughts, Zotto.
I had Hamatocanthoscypha laricionis recently on the same substrate, and even the smallest apothecia had a distinct disc shape and the abundant hairs were obvious.
However, I have no experience of other members of this genus.
With so little material to work with, we will probably never know.
Regards, Chris

I agree it looks quite different.
