Scutellinia legaliae
Malcolm Greaves, 01-07-2013 16:45
Malcolm GreavesThis Scutellinia was found in a tractor rut.
3.3mm across orange/red with short dark brown hairs. (max 550 x 24 septate)
The spores are round but not many are mature enough to get a good spore drop for staining and measurement. They look to be  about 16.5 in diameter and have thick based spines.
Is there anything other than S legaliae it could be?

Thanks
Mal

Re : Scutellinia legaliae
This specimen refused to mature before it started to deteriorate. I have added one photo which was the best I could manage. I am sure it shows the pointed spines of S legaliae (which were much more visible under the scope.

Adio Mal,

Very probably right : S. legaliae.
But very bad specimen...

Amically,

Re : Scutellinia legaliae
Hello there, Malcolm kindly sent the collection to Kew and I've made a couple of more images of the spores. Do these help with the identification?

Adio Paul & Mal,

Sorry for delay, influenza virus, big body-wash !

Yes, clearly S. legaliae.

Re : Scutellinia legaliae
Hi, Malcolm,

I can only agree: That's Scutellinia legaliae at its best, almost perfectly fitting the type with its short hairs, small apothecia, and, of course, the spores with the characteristic, often bent "thorns". The ecology, too, seems to be identical.

Regards to all

Re : Scutellinia legaliae
Hope you are now on the road to recovery Beñat. Thanks both for the confirmation. Paul was obviously able to find some more mature spores than I could.
