Melanconis alni?
Enrique Rubio, 07-04-2013 17:47
Enrique RubioDear friends
Can this fungus with so short and roundish appendages be Melanconis alni ?
It grew on Alnus glutinosa and the valsoid stromata have yellowish disc

Thanks again

Re : Melanconis alni?
Hi Enrique,

your collection more reminds me on M. chrysostroma than on M. alni, which has very distinct and long appendages.

björn

Hi Björn

But chrysostroma is not a fungus on Carpinus? My host is Alnus..

Good evening Enrique
The spores seem a little on the large size, but in general it looks all right; do you have Wehmeyer's 1941 "Revision"?

Re : Melanconis alni?
Good evening, Chris
Yes. I have read Wehmeyer's paper but he says 'the spores often show terminal appendages.......... wich measure 3-7 x 2-4.....'
The appendages of my spores are shorter, up to 2 microns only

Thanks!

Re : Melanconis alni?
he also says thats they are evanescent or may be completely lacking; I wonder how important the length is - while looking at various Gnomonia species recently it has struck me that appendage length can be a very plastic character - I stand to be corrected.
best wishes
Chris

Re : Melanconis alni?
Melanconiella flavovirens on Corylus, very typical.

Re : Melanconis alni?
You are welcome.

Perhaps a few words about this topic:
we know since 2002 (Castlebury et al., Mycologia) that Melanconis is polyphyletic.
Most species are in Melanconiella. We had to "kill" M. chrysostroma, unfortunately.

We have not published on Melanconis yet, but there are not so many species left. Some like e.g. M. carthusiana do not belong to these genera despite superficial similarity of both teleo- and anamorphs.

Best regards, Walter
