Scutellinia
Malcolm Greaves, 18-09-2012 11:21
Malcolm GreavesHello
Can someone help a new member sort out this Scutellinia?
A bright red fruit-body, 8mm across, on an almost submerged branch in a stream .
The bi-furcate hairs were maximum 480um long. flexuous and multi-septate.
The spores 17.5-20.8 x 15-17 but I am having trouble describing the warts to work through the key.

Thanks
Malcolm

Re : Scutellinia
Adio Malcolm,

This specimen is probably around Scutellinia "nigrohirtula complex". Actually, I've made a "complex" because species are on study (phylogeny, taxonomy, typus... etc.).
But your mesures of spores seems to be false. It is important to measure mature spores (sporogram is the better way). Your spores on blue cotton don't correspond to your measures...
Sorry, but work is long around this complex and I can't precise more now.

Sincerely,
Beñat

Re : Scutellinia
Thanks Beñat.
After what you said about the spores I took two samples of dropped spores the first were mounted in cotton blue and the second in water.
I measured them and the first group averaged out at 18.62 x 12.63 with a Q value of 1.47. Those in water gave an average of 20.28 x 15.03 (the largest not in this photo? being 23.8 x 17.3 ) and a Q value of 1.35. Does this normally happen and does this help in the id.
Thanks
Malcolm
