Dear Friends

Today I found very nice species - Bionectria compactiuscula. It develops as fungicolous - on the old (blackened) Russula fruitbodies in Carpathian Mountains (Ukraine).

Below I present some photoes of this species.

Did you already find this fungus in your countries and on which substrates?

My identification was confirmed by Hans-Josef Schroers.

This species really is fungicolous and often can develops on the another fungi in rotten wood. On woody hosts this species typically forming perithecia in crowded groups on a common stroma that breaks through the bark. It could be that there is not such a stroma when the primary substratum is a fungal tissue.

Also Hans-Josef inform me that the perithecia of this species have not yet been seen in Europe (only anamorph stage were seen).

Hi Alex,

Congratulations for this obviously rare find!
I avoid Russula as the devil avoids the Holy Water. Maybe this is why I never saw this... ;-)
