Lachnellula ellisiana ? again ?
Ethan Crenson, 28-01-2022 23:57
Hello all,

I found another location in New York City where a Lachnellula with long fusiform spores is growing on pine bark. At first I thought Lachnellula ellisiana, but I'm beginning to have some doubts. The spores in this case are not guttulate and the ends are somewhat more rounded than in my earlier collection. For this collection I had to keep it in a moist chamber for more than a week to make it drop spores.  There are also some spores with long club-like deformations at the end—I assume these are germinating, but I'm not entirely sure.  I have uploaded here a photo of the spores, but for more details there is an observation here:

And for comparison to the previous collection:

Thanks in advance,

Ethan

Re : Lachnellula ellisiana ? again ?
Hmm, this is not enough. Were the hairs smooth? Asci inamyloid I assume? Croziers?

Spore size?

Re : Lachnellula ellisiana ? again ?
Zotto, my apologies. I meant for you to see more details at the link to iNaturalist. But no matter. This collection took a very long time to study. It took a very long time to mature (if it ever did).

I collected some more information. In later mounts the spores developed oil drops, which they did not exhibit from the initial spore drop (above). The spores also seem to be a bit narrower in the later mounts, matching my earlier collection of L. ellisiana.

Spores from the spore drop (no oil drops)
17.7-22.7 x 3.9-4.6µm, fusiform, many appeared to be germinating.

Spores in later in crush mounts (guttulate):
19.7-21.4 x 3-3.5µm (slightly narrower)

Asci: 56-71 x 5.6-7.3µm, croziers+ (I believe...I only found about 6 asci in all of my mounts), IKI+

Hairs about 4.5µm wide, septate, with wart-like ornamentation. (I think that one of my illustrations of the hairs is actually paraphyses). The hairs are often clumped in a brownish granular substance.

Paraphyses around 3µm wide. In this collection most of the paraphyses did not show the characteristic lanceolate profile.

I have included an image of the excipulum which looks to be textura globulosa-angularis.

I hope this provides more clarity.

Thanks!

Ethan

Re : Lachnellula ellisiana ? again ?
Great! I add to your description:

Asci IKI+ deep blue (euamyloid), base with a lateral protuberance, not clearly forming a crozier (but this is not sure, I only cannot see whether the crozier is complete). In your other collection and in those I studied there is a complete crozier with a central perforation, so I assume this is also here the case.

I see only very minute oil drops in the spores. What you might mean are large, round to elongated vacuoles. Hairs irregularly warted below, smooth and gradually tapering above (I see only one such hair).

For my paper on this species I would greatly appreciate receiving the collection data.

Thanks

Zotto

Re : Lachnellula ellisiana ? again ?
Thanks! Was it a branch, twig, or thick trunk? Still standing? Which height above the soil? Little decayed I assume.

Re : Lachnellula ellisiana ? again ?
On bark on the trunk of a living tree about 6 feet / 1.8 meters from the ground.
