Snowmelt Orbilia from California
Alan Rockefeller, 21-04-2021 02:44
Alan RockefellerWhich Orbilia did I find at Echo Lake, Tahoe National Forest, California? It was on the inside of a piece of conifer bark - either Abies magnifica or Pinus contorta. Right at the snowmelt. Dried to an amber color. Small, less than 1 mm diameter.

Micrographs in Melzer's. All parts inamyloid, spores measuring ( 9.8 ) 10.1 – 11.5 (12) × (2.4) 2.7 – 3.1 (3.4) µm. Q = (3.3) 3.4 – 4.2 (4.5).

Re : Snowmelt Orbilia from California
Hi Alan

I can only recommend you to read the methods in the monograph. When you mount in MLZ then you will be unable to decide if this is an Orbiliomycete or a Helotiales.

Is the sample still fresh?

The asci could be inamyloid or hemiamyloid. If you don't have Lugol, take KOH and after wahsing add MLZ, only then you can be sure about inamyloidity.
