White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
Edvin Johannesen, 30-10-2020 20:59
Edvin Johannesen
Growing on wet branch of dead deciduous tree. Excipulum textura angularis. Ascus pore hemiamyloid, spores and intact asci with same dextrinoid colour reaction (reddish brown with IKI). Spores 3-septate, approx. 17-22 x 5 microns. Is this enough information to suggest an id? First microphotos in KOH.

Regards,

Edvin

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
On your beforelast pic it is actually faintly visible that the spores have a sheath that stains reddish in IKI.

The apos should be gelatinous internally and crystals should occur.

This is Ombrophila hemiamyloidea, which is not really an Ombrophila.

The paraphyses should contain VBs,

You are right, I do see the crystals. Thank you so much! Is this species as rare as GBIF indicates?

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
Bonjour,

Yes, I have the images of that collection (made in 2009) and also the collection data. Edvin, could you provide me coordinates? I would like to make a distruibution map. The date of collection was yesterday?

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
People send me stuff from all over the Norway, sometimes I need help from you guys.  This was collected in coastal Mid-Norway on 2 Oct. in a south-facing deciduous wood dominated by Corylus and Populus. I will send you by email the location details as soon as I get them from the collector.

Was it on acidic soil?

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
Bonjour Martin,

Bonjour Zotto,
Ombrophila ou Gelatinomollisia ?
Merci.

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
Surely it does, the genus Vibrissea is typical of acidic rock. Your enumeration of plants clearly speak for an acidic environment.

Gelatinomollisia is my preferred generic name.

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
Hi Mila,

I live very close to the locus typicus of this species. It is a small rivulet running through a sandstone creek. The acidic environment is also typical for Annulusmagnus triseptatus that grew on the same piece of wood as my collection.

Martin

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
The Norwegian specimen was collected in a south-facing deciduous forest at sea level, dominated by Corylus and Populus, in wet slope near rivulet, on dead Populus log. I did not collect it myself, so I cannot say anything about the acidity of the soil (no information about the vegetation apart from this).

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
On my old geological map of Skandinavia most regions are granitic, gneiss, micaschist etc., more or less acidic, also that region.

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
Yes, I have checked the geo-map. A broad belt of gneiss and granite goes across the area.  However, this close to the sea, sometimes there are local pockets of shell-sand which affects the acidity of the soil. I see now that the following vascular plants have been found nearby (within 1 km);

Stachys sylvatica, Polygonatum verticillatum, Paris quadrifolia, Melica nutans, Galium odoratum, Actaea spicata, Sanicula europaea, Iris pseudacorus, and Neottia nidus-avis.  Plus Corylus avellana. Not exactly species typical of an acidic environment, I would say.

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
Yes, this sounds like more bit of calcareous. So the marine deposits might have risen during the many thousands of years.

Re : White, truncate apothecia with hemiamyloid reaction
That's my assumption - not an uncommon phenomenon along the coast of Norway.
