Small white ascomycete on Schoenoplectus
Enrique Rubio, 26-08-2020 12:50
Enrique RubioHi to everybody
These small white and subsessile ascomata 0.2-0.3 mm diameter grew gregariously on Schoenoplectus (Scirpus) stems.
The IKI b (Calycina-type) asci have croziers. It has non-lanceolate filiform paraphyses, with a slightly enlarged obtuse apex containing some small refractive VBs (arrowed). The marginal hairs are very inconspicuous and they are made by two or three short cells with a short, subacute terminal element.
I want to think in a Psilachnum species or even a Calycina (turgidella, ellisii...) but this collection doesn't seem to adapt well to anything I know.
Do you have any ideas that could help me?

Many thanks again

Hi Enrique

could you send me the pics by mail so I could see the micros in better resolution?

Now it is clear: The Helotium microspis complex. Look in Pezizellaceae, Calycellina. Here in the large-spored folder.

Could someone scan for me regarding Calycellina microspis in Fungi of the Hebrides Dennis, page 142?

It isn't there on that page Enrique! Might it be there on a different page under a different name?

Hi Chris
I'm sure I've been confused.
The text with Dennis's combination in Calycellina was in Trans. Bot. Soc. Edinb., 150th anniversary supplement 45(3): 213 (1989) [1988]

I have a couple of PDFs from that journal - but unfortunately not that one :(

Here is what Dennis 1956 made, it is the basis for my identification.

Re : Small white ascomycete on Schoenoplectus
Thank you Chris, Eduard and Zotto
I find it hard to admit that the fungus I asked about is really Karsten's Peziza microspis with spores  6-8 x 1.0-1.5, which also says that asci "apice iodo no tinctae", although later Dennis seems to admit that the minute pore is blued by Melzer's reagent.
Everything seems too confusing...

Re : Small white ascomycete on Schoenoplectus
You are right, and I am also convinced that there exist several species. But I think that they are closely correlated and that H. microscpis could be the smaller spores variant with a low oil content in the spores. So yours I would name Calycellina aff. microspis. One of them could also be H. turgidellum, I do not see a clue to get more clarity without a very detailed type study. But dennis studied the types of both and a British record. The sketches are both from the type and I see a minute dot at the ascus apex in both sketches.
