Hy. vernus on Pinus cone?
Viktorie Halasu, 08-05-2019 16:01
Viktorie HalasuHello,
I've found this nice Hymenoscyphus last week, apothecia long- or short-stalked, disc up to cca 5 mm, growing in lowland forest, muddy place, on decayed Prunus padus wood + Pinus cones (both whole and with only the central column left). Can H. vernus grow on a cone too?

Sp. *(9,7) 10,5-12 (13,7) × (2,8) 2,9-3,5 (3,7) um, avg = 11,6 × 3,2 um, Q = 3,3-3,6-4.
Asci without croziers, 8spored. Excipulum not gelified.

Thank you very much in advance.
Viktorie

Re : Hy. vernus on Pinus cone?
Clearly H. vernus. But you mean your micros are from Prunus. And the macros are from all three substrata, the first on Prunus? Have you micros from Pinus too?

Re : Hy. vernus on Pinus cone?
Dear Zotto,
the main photos (and measurements) are actually from the apos on cone fragment. I misread my own notes, sorry. I've edited the first post a bit and it should be more clear now.

2. Micro from apothecia on whole Pinus cone:

Re : Hy. vernus on Pinus cone?
Yes, this is really the same. And I was earlier surprized that this species occurs not only on Alnus.... For me this is the first record on conifer.

Re : Hy. vernus on Pinus cone?
Thank you very much for confirmation. I didn't find any published records on Pinus so I had some doubts.

It's from Olomouc-Cernovir, otherwise lowland deciduous forest (Padus, Fraxinus, Populus) but here is a small stand of young pines near the edge of the forest, other trees (Padus) grow around it (Biscogniauxia granmoi was collected nearby some other day). leg. 1. V. 2019, herb. V.H. 1035.

Here are some photos of that wood. Strangely I forgot to take photo of the rays, but they were heterogenous, 10-20-35 × (1-) 4 (-5) cells. Spiral thickenings present, simple perforation plates.

Re : Hy. vernus on Pinus cone?
Not impossible that it is Prunus padus, when comparing Schweingruber.
