Ophiocordyceps entomorrhiza
Malcolm Greaves, 17-07-2014 12:59
Malcolm GreavesCan anyone suggest if this could be anything other than Ophiocordyceps entomorrhiza. I mistakenly assumed when I found a few of these that it was Cordyceps forquignonii. When I got it home it was not growing from a fly but what looks like a grass seed but I assume must be a pupa of some sort.

Thanks
Mal

Dear Malcolm,
I think your found the sexual stage of a Claviceps. The black form on which they grow seems to be a sclerotium.
Best regards, Pierre-Arthur

Re : Ophiocordyceps entomorrhiza
That accounts for why it looked like a grass seed. I have never seen it in this form before.
Thanks Pierre-Arthur.
