Malcolm GreavesThis specimen was one of a few on the moss covered bark of a fallen (salix) log in an area of marshy ground alongside a lake.
The apothecia was 5mm across with short hairs most between 250-300 one or two up to 370 x 18-20. Thick skinned at 3-4. Most hairs had simple roots some bi-furcate rarely tri-furcate.
Spores were broadly ellipsoid (in water) 20.45 x 14.46 (av of 15 spores). The ornamentation was of medium sized warts coalescing. I could find no sign of the outer wall loosening in heated LCB but one or two were wrinkled after the treatment.
S superba is the closest fit but I am not confident.
Any thoughts welcome.

Re : Scutellinia
And why not S. nigrohirtula (complex)?

Re : Scutellinia
Nicholas,
I am still looking for the thin unrooted (or inconspicuous bi-tri furcate) hairs shown in Schumacher rather than these pronounced roots but I know Benat has mentioned before that there is almost certainly a complex around this species probably with some on wood and others on soil.
Many thanks
Mal
