Hi, I need help for this Helvella species. I found it in Serbia, in the forest next to the brook on the ground. But she did not grow on a flat ground, but on a vertical, like on a wall. Apothecium 4-5cm diam. Stipe with ribs and very short, less then 1cm. I'm trying with a key in Skrede et al. 2017, but it's obvious that I'm wrong somewhere.

Re : Helvella
Or, maybe, that key is not so good.

You need to observe the ascus base (with or without croziers), and please show us an image of the ectal excipulum, in water.

Also the habitat helps, ecology in some Helvella is very distinctive.

However, judging on the photos, I bet:

- asci with croziers

- excipulum whith incospicuous, short-celled hairs

- vacuolar pale brownish pigment into the ectal excipulum, not distributed everywhere

- habitat under broadleaved trees.

Let me know

Regards

Mario

Re : Helvella
Hi Mario, I was back in the woods to find fresh material.
The forest is deciduous, altitude ~200m, Querco-Carpinetum (Quercus, Carpinus, Acer, Ulmus, Tilia...), asci with croziers, excipulum whith short-celled hairs, I'm not sure about brownish pigment.

Re : Helvella
You have a very, very interesting Helvella, it belongs to the Leucomelaenae section... the base of the asca is type pleurorhynchous, therefore it belongs to the complex of "H. solitaria", because ribs are extending only slightly onto basal excipular surface...

Great, these days I'm preparing some samples for sequencing, I'll send it.
