pink-purple asco on Fagus

Hi to all.

I have found these pink-purple ascos on a decorticated wood of Fagus. It seems to repose on a pink-purple subiculum.

Ascus IKI+ without croziers, 62,7-83,9 x 7,9-9,7 µm

Spores one-celled (sometimes 2-celled), hyalins, 7,3-12 x 2,4-3,6 µm   Q=3,1-3,4   N=30

No Idae for now. And you ?

Yannick

Bonjour Yannick -

your fungus reminds me of Patinellaria sanguinea - but the colour does not fit.

Re : pink-purple asco on Fagus

Re : pink-purple asco on Fagus
I feel this is typical P. sanguinea.

Reports in Dennis 1981 (Addit.), Svrcek 1978, Schmid 1990, Ellis & Ellis 1985 give almost exclusively angiosperm wood (various hosts) although what I saw was mainly gymnosperm wood.

I am unaware of a sequence of this species, so that would be very welcome!

Re : pink-purple asco on Fagus
Merci à tous pour vos idées. Je n'ai pas pu voir de boucles, ce qui ne veut pas dire qu'il n'y en a pas. Je vais y regarder de nouveau.

Zotto : i've got an ITS sequence, send in private.

Re : pink-purple asco on Fagus
Indeed, the species clusters with Durella suecica with high support. More distantly related are Durella macrospora, D. atrocyanea, Eriopezia caesia, and Arachnopeziza spp.! Very distant are Arachnoscypha aranea, Durella connivens etc.

The sequence includes some LSU (D1 region), but not much. usually D2 is also included.

My guess is that the type of Durella also belongs in this group, so it is a question whether to retain Patinellaria or merge it with Durella.

Re : pink-purple asco on Fagus
Yes, it's a good question.

I think I have another sequence for this specie from a sample found 2 years ago also found on Fagus. I will search it this week.

Re : pink-purple asco on Fagus
On all the iconographies that I have seen, it seems that the apos are black which is not the case here. Nicolas, Zotto : have you already seen this Patinelaria sanguinea with the same colors as mine ?

Re : pink-purple asco on Fagus
Yes, brownish-black appears to be typical, but I have photos by Peter Schirmer (HB 4687b) showing red colour in the disc (only centre blackish). See my folder in "Durella group".

In Schmid-ascomyceten im Bild 1&2_Page_037 the reddish colour is also there, and on a plate by Edouard Evangelisti (VI.2013).
