On Epilobium-not asco
Marja Pennanen, 31-01-2023 17:07
Hello folks,

I have found these brown ones (~1cmx0,5cm) on Epilobium for years. Now I finally looked, what  their microscophy looks like. Well, it looked brown and big, about 45-70+ x10-14.

Hopefully someone here knows, what these are, so I do not have to start trying to find a key for something like this.

Winter greetings: Marja

Hi Maria,

this is a rust fungus with two-celled teliospores. Do you know which Epilobium species this is precisely? Can you check if the spore walls are smooth or finely warted (hardly visible)

Re : On Epilobium-not asco
Hi Björn.

it seems to be nowadays Chamaenerion angustifolium, but was Epilobium, when I learned the latin name.

I have found these in spring

Marja

After writing the text above, I went and looked. There seems to be warts on the surface.

Is it Puccinia gigantea?

Hi Marja,

I have never found P. gigantea myself, but comparing to the descriptions in Klenke&Scholler and Gäumann, I have little doubt that your find is indeed this species.

Hi Björn,

what is the title of the source you mentioned and how may someone, who is a bit interested also in rust fungies, get it in her hands or computer?

Curiously: Marja

Hi Marja,

You can find the book by Gäumann online at the ETHZ website: https://www.e-periodica.ch/digbib/view?pid=cry-001%3A1959%3A12#4 Unfortunately, it is avaialble in German only but contains a lot of very nice drawings of spores. The book by Klenke and Scholler is "Pflanzenparasitische Kleinpilze" and German as well. It consists of keys only that are arranged according to host plant genera.

Best,

Björn

Re : On Epilobium-not asco
Thank you Björn, vielen danke!

Wau, that opus is huge!

I have a feeling, that Puccinia gigantea is more common in northern Finland than here in eastern Finland. At least last spring I saw them in Lapland at least as many, than I have found here altogether
