Marcelleina benkertii?
Maria Plekkenpol, 24-12-2022 16:21
Maria PlekkenpolHello, on the verge of Christmas eve first I wish everyone merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year!
A friend found these violet to deep purple ascomycetes this November on loamy soil, with moss and with Pinus and Betula (mostly) in the Netherlands. Apothecia were flattened, with rugulose hymenium, paler and smoother on the outer surface. They were about 8 mm. At first she thought of S. planchonis, but because of the purplish colouring of paraphyses and excipulum and the one big guttule in the smooth spores I think it's M. benkertii.
All the features and measurements fit the descriptions (Moravec and others), except that I didn't see any forked paraphyses. There is dried material and material in CTAB.
My questions are: Do you think my idea is correct? Does anyone know if there is type-material so that it can be sequenced? It would be the first record in the Netherlands. Thank you!!

Re : Marcelleina benkertii?
Hello.
I recently revised the holotype of M. benkertii and tried to sequence it but unfortunately the PCR failed. The material is rather old (collected in 1966). If you could make a sequencing of your collection, this would be helpful.
Although you did not give the spore dimensions, your collection fits this species.

Re : Marcelleina benkertii?
Hello Nicolas,
Thank you for your reply!
Spores were almost perfectly round: 9,6-10,5. We will send the material to Spain for sequencing, I must say that another friend does all this... Can you tell me what you would like to have and how or where you want me/us to send that to you?
One more thing: my friend who found these asked me specifically to place these two pictures: spores and asci in Meltzer. She has doubts about ornamentation yes or no, the picture of spores in ascus are stacked. What do you think?? She thinks it could be M. persoonii?

Re : Marcelleina benkertii?
Maria,
if you send the material to Pablo Alvarado in Spain, he knows which loci should be obtained. I'm working with him on this genus.

Re : Marcelleina benkertii?
Hi Nicolas, good to hear! He will then share the outcome with you I assume? If there is anything you need from me/us: let me know!
I changed my former message after a phonecall with my friend and added pictures: she thinks there is ornamentation and that it could maybe be M. persoonii.
What do you think?
