Small discomycete on dead leaves of Eriophorum vaginatum
Marcus Yeo, 03-09-2022 12:28
Here is another discomycete growing on dead leaves of Eriophorum vaginatum in blanket bog in NW England (at the locality where I found Nimbomollisia eriophori).

It has some distinctive features but I haven't been able to put a name to it.

Apothecia sessile; dark grey hymenium & black exterior; ca 300 µm diam.

Excipulum a dark brown textura oblita, with marginal cells resembling small paraphyses.

Paraphyses narrowly cylindrical usually with a slightly swollen apex; a single cylindrical refractive VB in the upper part.

Asci ca 60-75 x 13-15 µm; 8-spored; no reaction in IKI.

Ascospores ellipsoid-fusiform to weakly obovoid; hyaline; 3-septate; with numerous small slightly refractive OBs; (11-)12-15 x 4-5 µm.

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.

Marcus

Re : Small discomycete on dead leaves of Eriophorum vaginatum
This should be the rarely collected Pezizella nigrocorticata. I have it in my Calycellina folder with longer spores. The paraphysis content would speak for a Mollisia but the excipulum is porrecta in my understanding, very similar as in Durella which is another option for this fungus.

Thank you Zotto

My collection fits the description of Pezizella nigrocoticata well, apart from having rather smaller spores.

There are about 15 records from the UK, mainly in southern England.
