Lactophenol Cotton Blue

I use this for staining the warts on Scutellinia and also when heating spores to see if the outer surface loosens. I have just spotted that one bottle I have is LCB but another is just Cotton Blue in Lactic Acid with no mention of the Phenol. Does anyone know what component of the stain causes the loosening?Thanks

Hi Mal,
I usually use small amount of LACB to not overstain the preparate. When I suspected a species with loosening perisp. but it didn't show it even after gentle heating, I added a drop of lactic acid and then it loosened all right (after more heating or without, I don't remember). Pure LA is very viscous and goes rather slowly into the solution, I usually have to lift the edge of the coverslip a bit to help it overflow the section. And S. mirabilis preparate was not heated at all, but I left it overnight and the perisp. loosened too. I don't have any exper. with phenol, though.
