Asco on Himalayan Balsam
Malcolm Greaves, 04-06-2020 18:28
Malcolm GreavesHello
Can someone help with this long necked flask found on a dead Himalayan Balsam stem.
Only 1/3mm with spores 5.3 x 2.5. The spores look to be developing a septa but I could find none with a fully developed one so migh just be the internal structure.
Thanks
Mal

Hey Mal
I will take a guess and say something in the ophiostomatales but with only the anamorph it’s hard to narrow it down.

Re : Asco on Himalayan Balsam
Hello Mal

It's possible that this could be Arxiomyces vitis (syn. Phaeostoma vitis), which has evanescent asci with ascospores about the size that you give. They have a single large germ pore (large in comparison to the spore width) at one end of the ascospore - I wasn't sure whether I could see that in your image. It would only be the second GBI collection, to my knowledge, and if you have more material I'd be interested to see it.

There's not much published info on the genus but I'll send you a paper that treats the species (as Phaeostoma).

Best wihes

Paul

Re : Asco on Himalayan Balsam
I've looked at the specimen that Mal kindly sent me. I think it is a species of Arxiomyces, but it is a little different from A. vitis and is probably undescribed.
