Taphrina on Populus canescens catkins
Bernard Declercq, 09-05-2020 14:04
Bernard DeclercqHi,

Collected on female catkins of Populus canescens:
Swollen carpels bright yellow to slightly brownish. Asci cylindrical, with strongly tapering, flexuous base, 110-166x22-32 µm, without basal cell, some with bright yellow lipid bodies. Ascospores ovoid to oval, e.g. 8x4.5 µm, budding within the ascus.
According Petrydesova et al. (2013: 3091), the ascus length and width exclude Taphrina johansonii so that this collection is probably a T. rhizophora. But T. rhizophora is described as being exclusively collected on Populus alba.
Can anyone help me here? Thanks in advance.

Salut Bernard,

Juste un rappel : canescens = alba x tremula

Re : Taphrina on Populus canescens catkins
As Alain said Populus canescens is an hybrid of Populus alba. It doesn't seem to me that it is impossible to find Taphrina rhizophora on it. The most important criteria is the ascus length and it corresponds well with this species.
