Mortierella bainieri?
Chris Johnson, 11-02-2020 11:34
Good morning

I'm having trouble keying out what I take to be a Mortierella, and any help would be welcome.

On sheep dung.
Sporangiophores 2-3 cms, many with single branching.
Sporangia 45-48 µm wide.
Spores: 5.5–8.0 x 4.9–7.0 µm, Me= 7.0 x 6.3. Q = 1.1.
This keys out pretty well to Mortierella bainieri with the caviat that the quotient value would appear low. I say appear low because the keys only give size-ranges but would suggest a higher value.
Keys:
Ellis & Ellis - Microfungi on Miscellaneous Substrates - 4 species.
Gams - A key to the species of Mortierella
Any comments welcome.

Best regards, Chris

Re : Mortierella bainieri?
Hola Chris, no lo tengo claro, pero con esta medida de los esporangios, estas esporas incoloras y sus medidas, por proponer algo quizás, Echinostelium minutum.
Saludos.

Hola Josep

Thank you for that suggestion. Not one I know but will check it out.

Re : Mortierella bainieri?

This is not an Echinostelium. Much more I cannot say. It looks a bit like a protostelid, buth those usually have only one spore. I think it is a Mucorales - but I have only few expertise in those.

Best, Lothar

Re : Mortierella bainieri?
Thanks Lothar.

I was warming to the idea of Mucorales but I have even less knowledge.

Time to move on, I think.
