Re : Disco on Fraxinus excelsior
Yes, and more upto date Sclerencoelia fraxinicola (S. fascicularis is on Populus).

Could you please tell me the region in Norway? The white powder on the margin comes from crystals.

Re : Disco on Fraxinus excelsior
As you say, Zotto, we have one collection of fascicularis on Sorbus aucuparia too (1600 m).

Re : Disco on Fraxinus excelsior
There exist also fantastic samples on Salix which also show some genetic distance to Populus samples. For Sorbus I do not know of a sequence.

Re : Disco on Fraxinus excelsior
We also have some samples on Salix collected in Styria, in case they are of interest for further studies.

Best wishes,
Gernot

Hi, Zotto,

I will check later regarding dokus and let you know. I do have dried material which I could send somewhere for sequencing etc.

Best wishes,
Gernot

Re : Disco on Fraxinus excelsior
It was found on the island Hvasser, close to Tønsberg, 100 km south of Oslo, in a wet forest with Alnus glutinosa, Fraxinus excelsior and others.
Is the determination sure, Sclerencoelia fraxinicola, because it is growing on Fraxinus?

Re : Disco on Fraxinus excelsior
Thanks, and did you collect it the last days?

I must say that your micros are rather poor, but nevertheless there is no doubt, the macro looks just as the holotype which is here from my village.

Re : Disco on Fraxinus excelsior
I seems to grow on a corticiacea, doesn't it?

maybe, but I also see small ostioles

Yes. We collected it on the 20. of February. It has been a warm period the last weeks.

Re : Disco on Fraxinus excelsior
Or is this a (pseudo-)sclerotial stroma, and these "ostioles" are primordia of the Sclerencoelia. I do not see this on the holotype of fraxinicola (in the article), but in the pictures of S. fascicularis.

Re : Disco on Fraxinus excelsior
The two species do not differ in the sclerotial strutures. In dhe description this is written:

Sclerotia-like aggregations developing within or beneath
the bark, discoid-shaped or with one side elongated, in association
of flat, reticulate dark brown strands >10 mm long,
0.4–0.8 mm wide, 0.25–0.3 mm thick, composed of branched
blackish brown-walled hyphae.

I cannot imagine what these small pores are. We do not know a pycnidial anamorph of Sclerencoelia, and primordia I would exclude. Perhaps the miccroscope would clarify this?
