Heterosphaeria patella?
hannie wijers, 12-04-2018 19:31
Hello.
a friend  found on a spot where there are many Achillea millefolium I saw old stems of which she thinks it is Achillea. These stems are all covered with black frb. I did it under the bino. Measure of the spores 12-17x3-5 µm. Asci 80 µm with croziers at the end. Parafysen Setpated and with drops in it J- with Melzer. Both of us think of Heterosphaeria patella. Are we right?

Sincerely Hannie Wijers

Re : Heterosphaeria patella?
I think so. The ascus tip reacts faintly red, perhaps you used Melzer? It should be deeply red.

The medulla should be very thick and gelatinised.

Some other species of Heterosphaeria exist which are not always easy to identify.

Yes I used Melzer. Maybe sounds stupid, but what is the medulla? Thanks Zotto,

Re : Heterosphaeria patella?
Medullary excipulum is the inner excipulum. The ectal excipulum is a brown globulosa in Heterosphaeria but very thin.

Re : Heterosphaeria patella?
Zotto, do you mean this? The first the inner and second the outer side?

Hmm, it doesn't look as it should. But you don't have a razor blade? Near the margin the inner texture may look like this, but at the lower flanks it changes to intricate with gel, see below.

But the genus is very clear.
