Black bitunicate Ascomycete on old Pyrenomycete
Ethan Crenson, 03-11-2017 03:43
This is from New York City, on hardwood probably Quercus, growing on top of an effuse black pyrenomycete, probably Diatrype. They appear deceptively cupulate, even discoid, but on closer inspection they appear to be collapsed stromata. The largest is perhaps .3mm in diameter. They grow amid a coarse black subiculum.

Asci are bitunicate, IKI-, 136-143 by 25-30µm.

Spores multi-septate (6-7, maybe, hard to tell), hyaline, with abundant oil droplets, and some with an appendage at one end, 39-62 by 7.5-12.5µm.

Paraphyses are irregular and septate, some bulges and occasionally branching near the tips.

Any ideas? Thanks!
