Orbilia comma?
Yatsiuk Iryna, 19-10-2017 21:33
Yatsiuk IrynaDear all,
I have found this Orbilia in CWU herbarium. Collected in 2000 year, on the bark of unidentified tree, Eastern Ukraine.
Asci dead, 8-spored, base forked, 34-38 x 3.1-3.3 um.
Spores dead, 5.3-6.6 x 1.5-2.0 um, no SB's visible.
Paraphyses inflated on top, incrusted with caps.
I know that it worth almost nothing to look at dead Orbilias, but these spores seem so interesting... Dear Zotto, I hope for your comment, please!
Best wishes,
Iryna

Re : Orbilia comma?
Dear Irina
this is clearly O. comma, yes. We have no sample from SE Europe so far, the only being one by Eugene from SSW of Bryansk.

Is there only bark or also some remnants of wood? Ulmus wood is not difficult to identify, it is ring-pored and has characteristic small pores in the summer area of the wood. Also the inner side of the bark looks characteristic, I could perhaps say if you send me a macro of the inner side with enough magnification.

Zotto

Re : Orbilia comma?
Dear Zotto,
Thank you very much for confirmation! I'm really happy to have this species.
In herbarium package there is only the small piece of bark, but it looks like Ulmus indeed. I don't have my photocamera today, so did a picture on the phone. If the better picture is needed, Ill take a camera and do it tomorrow.
Best regards,
Iryna

Re : Orbilia comma?
This could be indeed Ulmus, but I am not sure. Best would be to photograph on the broken or cut pores, i.e., in cross section, to show the large pores arranged in rings (each representing a year). I attach an example.

Of cour se I would be glad to get the collection data to include this record in my distribution map.

Re : Orbilia comma?
Thank you very much for your offer. Did Alex instead change his forename? :-)

You can tell me the entire forenames, that is easier for me to follow and understand.

I transformed the data as follows: Ukraine, Kharkiv, 41 km S of Kharkiv (Charkiw), 8 km SSW of Zmiiv, 1 km E of Haidary, Gomilsha forest, 145 m, 49° 37' 32'' N 36° 19' 25'' E, branch of ?Ulmus, on bark, 21.VII.2000, O.Y. Akulov, vid. I.I. Yatsiuk (CWU Myc AS2014, d.v.).

Re : Orbilia comma?
Alex in russian is Alexander, in ukrainian he is Olexander, both are equally used. I just copied information from my database, where he is in his O-form:)

Alexander Akulov, Iryna Yatsiuk will be ok for us

Best regards,
Iryna

Re : Orbilia comma?
o.k. then, and did you look at the ring-pored wood?

Re : Orbilia comma?
No, unfortunately there is only that small piece of bark, no wood.

Re : Orbilia comma?
Ah, now I see it correctly. But on the inner side are no apos? Often O. comma densely covers the inside of detached bark.

Ulmus bark  may look characteristic inside too: The white and brown fibres are typical, but the perforations not always there.

Re : Orbilia comma?
Dear Zotto,
I have looked at this bark one more time. The inner side is rather smooth, with no perforations at all. In some places I see white fibres, but very scanty. The bark is very thin, delicate, scaly.
Also there are 2 FB of Orbilia on the inner side, most of them are on the outer one.

So it is not Ulmus perhaps?

Re : Orbilia comma?
Dear Iryna
really difficult to say :-(  Sometimes Ulmus looks quite characteristic, sometimes not.... I guess it is, but not sure. So we better write ?Ulmus.

Re : Orbilia comma?
Ok, let it be...
Thank you for your help and also for "in vivo veritas". It is extremely helpful, especially with Orbilias.
