Miguel Ángel Ribes, 01-02-2017 01:07
Miguel Ãngel RibesGood night

This small (500-600 µm) black ball with white hairs was growing at the beach, 1 m, at Thymelaea hirsuta branches.

Mature spores slightly brown, with 3 septa, (22,5) 25,2 - 28,5 (29,6) × (7,9) 8,2 - 9,7 (10) µm; Q = (2,4) 2,8 - 3,2 (3,3); N = 35; Me = 26,9 × 9 µm ; Qe = 3.

Asci 8-spored, with croziers, IKI-,  (90,7) 98 - 124,6 (133,4) × (14,8) 17,3 - 20 (21,7) µm; N = 34; Me = 113 × 18,4 µm

Ectal excipulum brown with textura angularis. Sorry, imposible to make a transversal section.

Paraphysis slightly moniliform.

White hairs with refringent and thick wall, 150-200 µm.

Thank you in advance.

Helminthosphaeria cf. ludens, but the hairs should be darker and many of the asci should have 4 mature spores.

Re : Black with white hairs 280117 361
Thank you Andrew

This night at home I will check all my asci pictures, but I remember all of them wiht 8 spores. About hairs, none not white; all old apos, when they loose the hairs, the few of them that remain are white too.

None similar species?

Best wishes.

Re : Black with white hairs 280117 361
This is the closest species that I know of.  All others have shorter ascospores.  See my key.  Lots of cryptic species in the Helminthosphaeriaceae.

Best,
Andy

Re : Black with white hairs 280117 361
Hi Andrew

Yes, with your key I arrive to H. ludens, but my spores are a little bigger, hairs are white and asci have 8 spores, inmature and mature (pictures attached).

No doubt about Helmintosphaeria? I said this because my ascomata is not hard and carbonaceus, it is soft.

Thank's a lot.

Re : Black with white hairs 280117 361
If you have 20-30 ascomata, send them to me and I can sequence this species and see what the DNA says.

Best,
Andy

Re : Black with white hairs 280117 361
No, no more than 8-10 ascomata, sorry, but if you want I could send all to you.

Best wishes.

Re : Black with white hairs 280117 361
Bummer... but this is typical for Helminthosphaeriaceae, which is why only insane people work on this group - ha!

No need to send.  I do not think I can get a good sequence from only a few ascoamta, and these things do not germinate in culture.

Best,
Andy

Jejejeje.

The collection was made at 500 km of my home, difficult to pick up again. Next year perhaps...

Thank you again.

Re : Black with white hairs 280117 361
Hello Andy

I have check all the branch slowly and I have count already 30 ascomatas (someone have no hairs, so difficult to see). I could sent you all my material if you give me your adress.

It is now in fresh condition, do you prefer I sent it fresh or dried?

Thank you.
