Sarcoscypha coccinea sur Picea abies
Patrice TANCHAUD, 07-02-2016 12:06
Bonjour,

une espèce banale, ce qui l'est peut-être moins c'est qu'elle poussait sur branches d'épicéa (Picea abies).
Merci d'avance pour vos remarques éventuelles.

Not sure if I ever heard of a coniferous host in S. coccinea. My homepage says:

Coniferous substrate was very rarely encountered. Picea sitchensis was reported by Butterfill & Spooner (1995), Picea abies by Mato?ec & Kušan (2007), and Abies alba by Peri? & Peri? (2007), always for S. austriaca.

you are sure with conifer? Easy to see from the wood. Substrates in sarcoscypha were frequently confused.

For me no doubt. Here other photos.

Ah o.k. you are probably right, especially the rotten wood looks coniferous. But you did't lok at the pores of the wood?

looks coniferous, but you would see the pores with a 10x or 15x handlens. Broken wood is better to view than when treated with a cutter.

Much faster, but the job may not be enough.

Re : Sarcoscypha coccinea sur Picea abies
Hard wood is difficult, but Picea i not so hard. Crushing is not good. Best is when the wood is half rotten, then easy to break.

Re : Sarcoscypha coccinea sur Picea abies
Nothing is easy for me in observing the wood, but I'm sure it's Picea here, this is the only conifer, and cones are typical for this species.
Thanks.
