Schizoxylon alboatrum?
M Jonathan, 14-12-2015 05:07
M JonathanI found this nice fungus on twig on ground, in Ottawa ontario, 13 december 2015.

Produce asci that measure up to 400µ long, that contain 8 spores, the total length of the spore was impossible to achieve as they tend to break out in smaller portion out of the ascus, but seem to measure about the same lenght as the ascus, and measure 2µ wide.

The paraphyse are simple, measuring 1µ wide.

Interestingly the asci have a tendancy to break or burst near the base, (about 80-90% of time).

My hesitation is the apical apparatus, wich I can't find good picture of to compare it with mine.

Re : Schizoxylon alboatrum?
Hi Jonathan

it is more a problem that the asci break so easily. But long asci often do.
The ascus apex looks typical for the family, look in Sherwood's 1977 etc. articles (Mycotaxon).

Did you test Lugol? most ostropales react hemiamyloid (red) for the entire hymenium, and maybe blue at the ascus apex.

Thank you! unfortunatly I only have Melzer right now, but I can check the Lugol reaction next time I go to the lab.
