Short haired Scutellina
Malcolm Greaves, 07-10-2014 17:19
Malcolm GreavesCan someone help with this Scutellinia.
Found a group of these in the mud at the base of a tree stump in a dried up stream.
Apothecia max 5mm across with very short and fat hairs longest 165µm x 22.5µm with thick walls at 4.5µm.
Unfortunately they are not as yet mature so I have not been able to get a spore drop or even find any ejected spores in a mounted section so I cannot show the ornamentation as yet.
The largest spores still in the asci are 13-14.5µm x 10-10.5µm
S minutella is the closest fit so far with the information I have but the mature spores would confim.

Thanks
Mal

Re : Short haired Scutellina
Difficult without the ornamentation of spores, but hair length and size of the spores could match. To be confirmed.

Michel.

Re : Short haired Scutellina
Just a provisional update on this one.
Having no luck with the specimens maturing I went back and collected what I hoped were more mature specimens. One shown was very pale so I hoped this would provide the necessary spores. I did notice that one or two of the apothecia were convex) Unfortunately all were still reluctant to release any spores. Many of the ascii had aborted spores in both the first collection and the second.
The hairs were still very crowded especially at the edge (but not overlapping the edge) mostly 150 (the longest I found was 175) all simple roots.
The very few spores that were expelled were 14-15 x 10.5-11 and had the wrong shape for S minutella. Staining was not sucessful with most spores absorbing the stain.
I will continue to monior in the hope at least one of the fruit-bodies matures.

Re : Short haired Scutellina
I have finally started to get ejected spores but not sure it will help with the id. None seem to show ornamentation. Some still show internal guttules and some just seem to take up the cotton blue internally.
Any help appreciated.

Adio Mal,

Definitively not mature !!
Surely, it isn't minutella.

Re : Short haired Scutellina
At last dozens of ejected spores but still none showing the Scutellinia type ornamentation. This will just have to go down as an unusual but unknown Scutellinia.

Thanks

Re : Short haired Scutellina
Adio Mal,

I have received material in good state.
Not possible to determinate because victim of an abortive development, probably genetical problem at the beginning, in the mycelium, because all of apothecia have problems on paraphyses, hairs, asci and spores.
And I have seen ejected spores on slides, but naturally, abortive, not-developed.

A mount of some problems,

Beñat

Re : Short haired Scutellina
Thanks for your time Beñat. No wonder I was having trouble coming to any successful conclusion.
I will just have to keep an eye open on the site next year and try again.
