Strange Mollisia on grass
Maren Kamke, 02-08-2014 09:53
Maren KamkeHi everybody,
I found this Mollisia species on a grass (Poaceae). The apothecia are white, somewhat translucent with a diameter of 1 mm. They contain crystals in the medulla and have margincells which measures up to 50 x 11 µm.
Asci: 75-91x6-7 µm, 8-spored, IKL absolute negative (with Baral, Lugol and Melzer), with croziers
Paraphyses with irregular guttules, up to 4 µm, KOH negative
Spores (15-24) 19,3 x 2,9 (2,5-4) µm, hyalin, oil „0-1", mostly 1-septate, even in the ascus.
Thank you for your help.
Regards, Maren

Re : Strange Mollisia on grass
Thank you very much, Zotto, I was irretated about the "not" cylindrical VBs :).

Re : Strange Mollisia on grass
I must correct myself, Torsten Richter drew my attention to the negative KOh reaction which is actually +/- strongly yellow in phalaridis. But I must admite I did not test it in every case. Also the reaction is unknown for the type. So it would be good to carefully compare your data with those in my Cubby folder.

My determinations are often done within less then a minute, I have no more time :-(

Re : Strange Mollisia on grass
Thank you Zotto, so it was a strange Mollisia anyway :).

In spite of the chemical reaktions it looks very like M. phalaridis, I compared with everything I could find about this species.
The stalk was 2 weeks in the refrigerator, so the specimens were quite old. This is probably the reason for so many 1-septate spores and the macroscopic pale appearance of the apothecia. This might be even the reason why they didn't react properly to the chemicals.
Regards, Maren

Re : Strange Mollisia on grass
o.k., that could be though the VBs in the paraphyses look very healthy.
