Pale Yellow Ascomycete Becoming Creamy Orange
Peter Thompson, 28-01-2014 10:53
Hello Everyone,

I have been sent fruit bodies of a pale yellow asco, soon becoming a creamy orange colour, growing on dead, attached twigs of Taxus baccata, which are losing their bark.

The fruit bodies range between flat discs and convex cushions (illustrated).

The microscopy is attached. Many of the 1-septate spores have one cell wider than the other. The septum is either central or slightly nearer the lower end.

There do not seem to be many ascomycetes which grow on Taxus baccata (none in the Ascofrance database). Having spent a few hours investigating, I am still none the wiser.

I wonder if anyone has encountered anything like this and might know what it is?

Thank you,
Peter Thompson.

Hi Peter

in my database I find only a Phacidium dearnessii on Taxus needles with spores 6-11 x 3.5-5, but that species has aseptate spores and apos with large marginal lobes.

Hi Peter,

Bioinfo UK is a good source to check: http://www.bioinfo.org.uk/html/Taxus_baccata.htm

They list a lot of fungi on T.b.

Martin

That's good, thanks Martin. But I see only Cryptocline as helotialean fungus listed. That coelomycete should be connected to something but the ana-teleo server is presently out of work.

Re : Pale Yellow Ascomycete Becoming Creamy Orange
Hello Martin and Zotto,

Thank you for your replies.

I will have a good look through the list of fungi associated with Taxus. I was also sent Bionectria ralfsii, which is listed, though it was found over 100 miles from Cornwall, as originally described by E&E.

With Best Wishes,
Peter.
