Zuzana Sochorová (Egertová)Nice evening to all Octospora fans :-)
in October I found a big group of Octosporas on a mossy soil digged before a recently built house.
Microscope showed there were 2 species:
1) "Octospora axillaris" - spores biseriate, usually with 2 guttules, 22-25x9-10 micrometer.
2) "Octospora gyalectoides" - spores uniseriate, usually with 1 guttule, 18-20,5x10-11 micrometer.
What´s your oppinion?
Moravia (Czech republic), 12. X. 2013.

Re : Octospora
Dear Zuzana,
I agree with your identifications. Your first image probably shows O. axillaris, because Phascum cuspidatum is nearby. The second one should be O. gyalectoides with Bryum dichotomum as the likely host. Macroscopically both species are very similar and they often grow in the same kind of habitat.

With best wishes

Jan

Re : Octospora
Dear Jan,
thank you very much for confirmation!
Hopefully I will be able to recognize more mosses with time and then everything will be easier.
