Unknown growth on rotting hardwood
Gina Rackley, 23-01-2014 16:41

The fruiting bodies are dark grey and round disc shapes. They grow on the surface of the barkless wood. There is a distinct edge, but no hairs on the outside edge. They are less than 0.5mm across. The spores are dark in colour with one septum and 2 droplets on either side of the septum. One side of the spore is slightly smaller than the other. The spores average 16.22 x 4.91 microns. The paraphyses are longer than the asci and translucent with a brown tip, they are segmented. The asci are about 42 microns long, 8 spored.

I have no idea what they are and would appreciate any ideas.

Please apply Lugol (in low concentration), the asci should stain deeply blue.

I think it is a Dactylospora.

Re : Unknown growth on rotting hardwood
Thankyou. I used all the samples that I had collected to get information on the structure. I will return today and try to find more for the test. Thank you again. Gina.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back on this. The lugol's turn the tip of the asci blue. Gina.
