Coprotus leucopocillum ?
Maren Kamke, 08-07-2013 06:48
Maren KamkeHi everybody,
I found this fungus on horsedung.
Apothecia 0,5 mm, somewhat reddish with potruding hyalin asci.
Spores hyalin, smooth, (17-19,5) 18,45x9,02 (8,5-10) µm. Asci operculate, iodine reaktion negative, cylindric, uniseriat, very long 210x18 µm. Blue iodine reaktion of the excipulum. Paraphyses inflated up to 6 µm, with light reddish content, not curved.
I'm not sure of C. leucopocillum because of the length of the asci.
Thanks
Regards Maren

Re : Coprotus leucopocillum ?
Hi Maren
I think these spores are proportionately too narrow for C. leucopocillum (do you have a Q value?). Your final photograph seems to show a selective blueing of some of the asci, rather than of the excipulum, such as you might find in (inter alia) Thecotheus spp. Is this just an optical illusion?
best wishes
Chris

Re : Coprotus leucopocillum ?
Hello Maren et Chris.

It seems that this fungus immaturity should check the reaction of the asci, the presence of reddish tint away from the kind Coprotus, and guide rather to Ascobolus.

Regards.

Michel.

Re : Coprotus leucopocillum ?
Hi Maren,

Thecotheus is really a very good idea!
In my opinion this is Thecotheus keithii.
This species is not rare on horse dung and I found it several times.
Last year we discussed this species at pilzforum.eu.
Look here:

Hi Maren,

there is another comparison:

Thecotheus keithii

I have the same opinion, this should be T. keithii.

Re : Coprotus leucopocillum ?
Sorry, excuse me for my mistake, I answered too quickly and I was not able to see the apiculate. Yes, definitely a Thecotheus.

Michel.
