Tricharina praecox or Wilcoxina mikolae
Miguel Ángel Ribes, 28-02-2013 00:30
Miguel Ãngel RibesGood night

This is from La Gomera (Canary Islands), in a very wet place recently burned, 1.100 m, in "fayal-brezal", semihipogeous, in ash slurry, 4-8 mm, yellow hymenium, beside Peziza.

Hairs from margen to basal zone.

Thank you.

Q = (1.5) 1.55 - 1.7 (1.9) ; N = 33
Me = 13.8 x 8.4 µm ; Qe = 1.7

Re : Tricharina praecox or Wilcoxina mikolae
Adio Miguel,

I don't remember where but I have read that all of Wilcoxina species are always mycorrhizic with conifer trees. Hosts of Wilcoxina mikolae are Pinus and Picea in general.
And Tricharina praecox seems to grow in burnt place and a part of apothecia are driven in the soil. Like your collection...

Are Pinaceae trees present in your habitat ?
In the past, I have known the same problem but I don't refind my data.
I will try to search again and keep you in the loop.

Moreover and as you know, I'm very not a specialist of these genus...
Amically (and un saludo to Fermin)
Beñat

Friend Beñat

I am not the collector, Rubén Negrín is. I am going to ask him, but "a priori" the habitat is fayal-brezal (Erica arborea, Myrica faya, Laurus novocanariensis ...), but sometimes there are some Pinus canariensis or P. radiata mixed.

Amically.

Re : Tricharina praecox or Wilcoxina mikolae
Hi Miguel,
do you tested with cotton blue whether the spores have an ornamentation or not?
The spores of T. praecox var. praecox and of T. praecox var. cretea have a finely warted perispor.
For T. praecox var. praecox look here: https://www.sites.google.com/site/funghiparadise/ascomycota/pezizales/pyronemataceae/tricharina-praecox-var-praecox-p-karst-dennis-1971

Re : Tricharina praecox or Wilcoxina mikolae
Hi Uwe

No, I did not check it. I have dried material, perhaps tomorrow.

Is not the hymenium very yellow for T. praecox?

Hi Beñat

Rubén said no Piceae, only mud of ash from last year La Gomera fire in fayal-brezal. Perhaps Piceae above, but  burned, not in a good condition to mycorrhizical process.

Thanks.

Re : Tricharina praecox or Wilcoxina mikolae
Hi Miguel,
the yellow color is no problem. The hymenium of T. praecox can be yellow or brown. Sometimes it has also a orange tinge. The hairs can be hyalin or light brown. T. praecox is macroscopically a very variable taxon.
Here is a photo of T. praecox with a yellow hymenium, collected by Peter Püwert.
Best, Uwe

Re : Tricharina praecox or Wilcoxina mikolae
I would like to take up this old post because I examined the dried material finding spore ornamentation, like Uwe suggestaed me, but I forgot to upload the pictures.

I understand with this spore ornamentation this is Tricharina praecox v praecox, isn't it?

Thank you.
